Name labels for bottles, lunch boxes, and backpacks: where to stick them and how to care for them
A bottle, lunch box, or backpack with no name gets lost more easily, and in a classroom where everyone has the same one, it gets mixed up. A name label fixes that in seconds. Here is how to stick it on properly, where it works best, and how to care for it so it lasts all year.
Where to stick the label on each item
On a bottle or thermos, on a smooth part of the body, away from the lid and the base. On a lunch box, on the lid or a smooth side. On a backpack, on a flat area outside, or inside if you would rather it not show.
Avoid seams, edges, and raised areas: that is where a label peels first.
How to apply it so it lasts
Clean and dry the surface well, peel the backing without touching the adhesive, and press from the center out to push the air out. It helps to wait a while before the first time it gets wet.
The vinyl we use resists water, sun, and scratches. Even so, treat it with care: do not scrape the label or leave it soaking for long.
Which design to choose
Large letters and good color contrast so it reads from a distance. For little ones, a drawing helps them recognize their things; for older kids, something simple with first and last name works better.
For siblings, pick a different color for each so they know which is theirs without reading.
